Prepare For A Remote Job in 2023 (Part 2)
Do These OtherThings Now To Increase Your Chances Of Getting A Remote Job In The New Year
Quick Recap:
In my last message I asked you to:
Decide what kind of remote job you want (get very specific)
Get your mindset in order
Make a list of target companies you’d want to work for
Over the last week, I got laid off, and since then, I’ve been doing this myself, since I want to go into next year with a game plan, even if I don’t rush into a job. So since working on that, I’ve also been able to identify a few other key things that are important to do.
Build Your Network
Since you have a list of target companies you want to work for, it’s time to start building your network in and around those companies.
Set yourself a target for how many connections you want to get each week. This is pretty simple, all you need to do is look at the number of companies on your list, look at the size of each company (doable on LinkedIn), and think about how many people it would be good to connect with.
Start Expressing Yourself (Professionally)
On LinkedIn.
Or on Twitter.
Or in a blog.
Or in a Substack newsletter (like this one!).
Or even on Youtube or TikTok.
Whichever format you choose, start writing and/or creating content about the thing you want to do work with.
As you build your audience, all kinds of interesting opportunities will start to emerge.
And if you are laser focused on creating content for the type of job you want to do?
Not only will you increase the chances you’ll be seen by recruiters and hiring managers, but you’ll also be creating a powerful case study that showcases what you know about a field you and helps you better prepare for interviews.
Start Building Your Remote Side Business
Read the next line out loud:
“2023 is the year I start building my remote side business.”
This is so important. Next year I will be writing A LOT in this newsletter about my experiences building side businesses.
The reason? This newsletter is all about building a Work From Anywhere career. A career is not just your day job:
It’s your side business
It’s your network
It’s your professional reputation
It’s everything you learn from all of those
And having a side business will increase your chances of having income in case you are struggling to get a remote job. It will also help you build and practice key skills you can use when you eventually land a job.
Not sure what side business to start? In my next email, I’ll share with you where I’m putting my focus, and why. But I’m guessing, knowing my readers, many of you are already ahead of me on this one.
And that’s it! Go ahead and get started. A great remote job is waiting for you in 2023, all you need to do is lay the foundation for it to come.
